The Powell wrestling team got off a rough start but has displayed some improvement over the last couple of weeks. They defeated Lander in a dual in the Ron Thon meet in Riverton plus 2 duals wins in the Worland meet against Lovell and Cody, along with two duals wins in the Lander Invite over Mountain View and Rawlins.

The Panthers team starts out with defending 3A state champion Seth Horton at 152 pounds. He won it all last year at 152 with a 5-2 win over Clay Reiner of Buffalo at the state meet in Casper and finished the season at 37-3. Horton is a very skilled wrestler who had an excellent chance of repeating as state champion, provided he stays healthy.

Logan Werner is wrestling at 120 this season and placed 4th at the 3A state tournament at 113 pounds. Here's another guy who is solid on the mat but also knows that improvement is the name of the game. The junior has a huge upside so we'll see where he goes.

Emma Karhu is one of the ladies that wrestle with the guys in the Wyoming prep ranks. She comes from a long family lineage of wrestlers and last year won a match at the state tournament at 120 pounds with a 7-2 win over Raf Greene of Star Valley. She did absorb 2 losses after that win to Dan Weinrich and Kyle Anderson of Worland but proved she belonged. Karhu finished last season at 19-19 and is the senior is ranked 5th this season at 126 by wyowrestling.com

We caught up with Karhu and Werner in Riverton last week for their thoughts on the season to date. Enjoy.
