After a seven-year absence from the state tournament, the Sundance boys basketball team has qualified in back-to-back years. These last two seasons have been productive for the Bulldogs with a 3rd place finish in 2021 and a 2nd place finish in 2020.

Sundance entered the 2A state tournament as a #1 seed from the east and dispatched Greybull in the quarterfinal round 55-36. At one point in this contest, the Bulldogs led 50-19 and were led in scoring by Brad Krueger with 14 points. Gunner McLaughlin and Lane Gill had 9 apiece as the team shot 44% from the field in this game.

In the 2A semi-final round, Sundance played an entertaining game with Big Piney but lost in overtime 64-61. There was a whopping 43 points scored in the 4th quarter but the Bulldogs were outscored in the 4th quarter by 5 and overtime by 3. Lane Gill had 17 for Sundance with Landon Martin chipping in 15 and Gunner McLaughlin 11. They had just 12 turnovers in the game but also went 5-24 from 3 point land.

So that put Sundance in the 3rd/4th place game against Pine Bluffs and the Dogs ended the season on the right foot with a 65-37 win. Sundance won all four quarters getting 20 points from McLaughlin, 15 from Gill, 12 from Krueger, and 10 points from Martin.

The Bulldogs finished the year 21-2 and had 3 all-state players on the roster. Lane Gill earned all-state status for the 2nd straight year and he averaged 13 points a game, Gunner McLaughlin was all-state, throwing in 13 a game and Landon Martin was an all-stater, averaging a dozen points per contest. Brad Kruger had 9 points per game and was named all-conference.

Gill, Martin, and Krueger were seniors so that's a lot of production they'll have to replace for next year. But McLaughlin returns as a senior in 2021-22 so he's someone that the team can build around. Check out a short video of the Bulldogs in the state tournament. Enjoy!
