PhotoFest! Star Valley 3-Peats as 3A Football State Champions
Star Valley and Cody have now combined to win the last 5, 3A Football State Championships with Star Valley winning the last 3. These two teams met in the 3A Championship for the 3rd straight year and in each of those years, Star Valley has found a way to win. It wasn't pretty for the Braves on Friday in Laramie but it was effective, winning 20-7.
Star Valley took a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter on a 4-yard run for a touchdown by Grant Thomson so the Braves led for good at 7-0. SV added a TD in the 2nd quarter as quarterback Smith McClure got into the end zone from the doorstep to make it 14-0.
Cody got back into the game in the 3rd quarter as Grady McCarten scored from 2 yards out to cut the gap to 14-7. Star Valley responded with McClure getting the touchdown on the keeper from the 1 to bump the lead to 20-7.
Neither team scored in the 4th quarter, although Cody converted on a 4th down and 13 in a drive midway through the quarter but gave up the ball on downs as they were stopped later in the drive on 4th down and 2. Star Valley was a remarkable 10-16 on 3rd down in the game but the Broncs were 4-6 on 4th down.
Brave quarterback Smith McClure threw for 97 yards and ran for 72. Cody quarterback Maddax back threw for 123 yards and Grady McCarten ran for 88.
Star Valley goes 12-0 this season and has lost just 3 games over the last 3 years. Cody finishes at 9-2 and has lost just 5 games over the last 4 years. We have some photos to share from the 3A Championship game and they can be found in our gallery below. Enjoy!
