Adjustments Made To Wyoming Legion Baseball State Tournaments

The Defending Class ‘A’ State Champion Cody Cubs accepted an invitation to play in the Class ‘AA’ Wyoming American Legion Baseball State Tournament Tuesday.

A void was created in the ‘AA’ state tournament bracket earlier this week when Cheyenne chose to skip the Wyoming state tournament in favor of going to the Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, NM July 26 through August 3.

Wyoming Legion Baseball State Chairman Cody Beers released late Tuesday night that after discussions with Wyoming Class ‘AA’ coaching representatives, a decision was made to extend an invitation to the Cubs. Cody manager Bart Grenz agreed to play up. The Cubs will be the fourth seed from the ‘AA’ East Conference.

With the Cubs not playing at the Class ‘A’ State Tournament, that creates an in-balance between the two conferences at that level. Beers says he met with the Class ‘A’ coaching representatives and finalized those details.

Green River, Powell, and Riverton will finish out their West Conference slate and be seeded in the top three accordingly. The five teams in the Single-A East Conference, Cheyenne ‘A,’ Douglas, Gillette ‘A,’ Torrington, and Wheatland will finish their league schedule and vie for a top-four seed. The team that finishes fifth will then be shifted over as the fourth seed from the West Conference.

Players for the Cody Cubs will still be considered for Class ‘A’ All-State honors for the 2019 season, and their head coach Bart Grenz will continue to help coordinate those honors.

Beers said he will be meeting with coaches at both state tournaments to discuss what’s transpired with Cheyenne’s decision. Beers stated it’s “my desire of every Wyoming Legion team to, first and foremost, "honor the patch."

This means both tournaments will have eight-team, double-elimination tournaments. The Wyoming Class ‘AA’ American Legion Baseball State Tournament is July 26-30 in Gillette. The Wyoming Class ‘A’ State Tournament is in Douglas July 30 through August 3.

Cody will still host the Class 'A' Northwest Regional Tournament August 9-13, 2019.

Beers also said Cheyenne’s conference schedule is null and void for the standings and any seeding for the ‘AA’ East Conference.
