Laramie senor Paulo Mellizo is the second winner of the WyoPreps Athlete of the Year Award for Boys’ Tennis presented by Premier Bone and Joint Centers of Wyoming. Mellizo won a state championship for the first time in his career with an undefeated record and earned all-state honors during the fall 2024 high school season.

Mellizo finished 17-0 at the No. 1 boys’ singles position and lost only three sets all year. He went 10-0 in the regular season. Paulo added three victories and a title at the regional tournament. He followed that with four wins at the state tournament. Mellizo won his first three matches at the state championships in straight sets. He posted a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory in the finals and locked up the crown.

WyoPreps’ David Settle presented the award to Mellizo on Monday. He reacted to receiving this honor, discussed his senior season, how he dealt with his role as the favorite this year, described how he played and what he focused on to win the title, and more.
