The inaugural recipient of the WyoPreps Athlete of the Year award for Girls’ Basketball, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming and Wyld Gear, was Cody High School’s Molly Hays. The two-time Gatorade Player of the Year was a four-time all-state selection by the coaches in her prep career. She had an outstanding 2023-24 high school season cut short by an injury.

Hays led the Cody Fillies to a 22-3 record and a semifinal appearance at the 4A state basketball tournament. They won the 4A Northwest Conference and 4A West Regional titles in the 23-24 season. She averaged 21.6 points per game and shot 51 percent from the field and 79 percent at the foul line. Hays added 5.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 5 steals per game. She was the 4A West Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. She was the third-leading scorer in the state and third in steals per game. Hays helped the Fillies lead Class 4A in scoring (59.2 ppg), field goal shooting (42.1%), and team defense (34 ppg allowed). Cody ranked in the top six of those categories state-wide.

Hays spoke to WyoPreps recently after hearing about her award. She described her senior season on the basketball court, winning another Gatorade honor, adjustments with new teammates, improvements she made from her junior to senior year, signing at Idaho State, helping Cody get to the top of 4A girls’ basketball, and more.

Congratulations to Molly Hays!
