2024 WYOMING LEGION BASEBALL SEASON NEWS AND NOTES
What a year 2023 was! The Cheyenne Sixers made the first appearance by a team from Wyoming (92 years) at the American Legion World Series. They finished as one of the last four teams in the country. Before that, Wyoming made history with two teams in the Northwest Regional Championship when Cheyenne defeated Gillette to advance to the ALWS. At the NWCART in Montana, Wyoming Single-A State Champion Powell went 2-2. The Pioneers were one of the last four at that tournament.
Now, it’s on to 2024.
The top eight teams are in the Double-A division. They are the same as last year. Casper, Cheyenne Sixers, Cheyenne Hawks, Gillette, Jackson, Laramie, Rock Springs, and Sheridan. This year starts a new two-year rotation of conference games. All conference games must be completed by July 21.
The 2024 ‘AA’ State Tournament will be in Casper from July 29 through August 2. The National/Regional modified, double-elimination bracket will be followed. The Northwest Regional for AA legion baseball is in Billings, MT, on Aug. 7-11, 2024. The 97th American Legion World Series is in Shelby, NC, on Aug. 15-20, 2024.
Seventeen teams are playing at the Single-A level this year.
The East is playing as one nine-team conference with no district tournament. Teams will play a three-game set for conference games. They chose this for a two-year rotation. In the East Conference are Buffalo, Casper, Cheyenne Eagles, Douglas, Gillette, Laramie, Sheridan, Torrington, and Wheatland.
The West Conference is divided into two quadrants. They will play home and away conference doubleheaders within the quadrant. The Northwest is Cody, Lovell, Powell, and Riverton (combined program with Lander). The Southwest will be Evanston, Green River, Rawlins, and Saratoga. The West will hold a District Tournament from July 18-21, 2024, in Green River. The 2024 A State Tournament will be in Powell from July 27-31, 2024. They will follow the National/Regional modified, double-elimination bracket. The winner will advance to the Northwest Class A Regional Tournament (NWCART) in Roseburg, OR, on Aug. 7-11, 2024.
Single-A will also host an All-Star Game and Home Run Derby in Green River on Aug. 9-10, 2024. The Home Run Derby will be at 7 p.m. on Aug. 9. The all-star game is at noon on Aug. 10.
Class B teams are Casper, Cheyenne, Cody, Gillette, Powell, Rawlins, Riverton, Sheridan, and Torrington. Teams will be ranked by their win-loss record. The eighth and ninth-seeded teams will play for the final spot at the state tournament. The Class B state tournament is in Torrington on July 24-28, 2024.
There are 18 Class C teams. In the Northeast are Buffalo, Douglas, Gillette, and Sheridan. The Northwest is Cody, Lovell, Powell, Riverton, and Worland. The Southeast is Cheyenne, Laramie, Saratoga, Torrington, and Wheatland. In the Southwest are Evanston, Green River, Jackson, and Lander. Their state tournament is in Lovell on July 18-21, 2024. Only the top two teams in each quadrant will advance to the state tournament. Your games against teams within your quadrant count toward state tournament seeding.
Both Class B and C state tournaments will use the standard eight-team, double-elimination bracket.
Finally, any ties within conference play will be decided by the following criteria and in this order. First is head-to-head. Second, are runs allowed. Third, is runs scored. The fourth would be a coin flip. For both runs allowed and runs scored, it is the total number from all conference games.
Also, no re-entry and no courtesy runners will be allowed during conference and state tournaments.
Let’s, play ball!
