Lovell Mustangs Win Class A State Championship In Baseball

The Lovel Mustangs made program history on Monday in Sheridan. They won their first Single-A American Legion Baseball State Championship with a 5-1 victory over the Cody Cubs in the title game. Lovell scored two runs in the third to take the lead and extended their advantage with three more runs in the fifth inning. Lovell advances to the Northwest Class A Regional Tournament in Burley, ID.

Cody took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after a single and a walk. Kanin Phillips came through with an RBI single to right field. Lovell settled in during the third inning. After a single and a walk, a fielder’s choice led to an out, but an error allowed the Mustangs to tie the game. Cash Wassmer followed with the go-ahead RBI single to right field and a 2-1 lead for Lovell.

The Mustangs added to their lead in the fifth. After a single and a double, a wild pitch plated a run, and then Alex Hedges produced a two-run single for a 5-1 cushion. That was the final margin. Lovell starter Lafe Files made it stand up. He gave up one run on five hits in the complete game victory. Files struck out six and walked one on 96 total pitches. He worked a one-two-three seventh with two strikeouts and a pop-up in foul territory. After that, the celebration was on for Lovell.

Wasmer was 2-3 with one walk, one RBI, and one run scored for the Mustangs. Mac Morgan added one hit and scored two runs.

Jace Jarrett paced Cody with two hits, including a double, and scored the Cubs’ only run. He took the loss on the mound and threw all seven innings. Jarrett allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits. He struck out five and walked three.

The Postseason Continues for the Mustangs

Lovell will play the host Burley (ID) Green Sox on Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m. They will be joined by the Idaho state champ, the Montana state champ and state runner-up, and the state champions from Alaska, Oregon, and Utah. The double-elimination regional tournament runs through Aug. 11.
