The #2 and #3 ranked teams in 4A football met on Friday in Gillette with playoff seeds on the line. The winner of the Campbell County-Cheyenne East game would be seeded 2nd in the post-season tournament and the loser would be seeded 3rd. Campbell County came back from 12 points down in the 4th quarter to stun East, 29-26.

Camel quarterback Mason Drube got right with it in quarter #1 with a touchdown pass to Garrett Herther that went for 20 yards to give the home team a 7-0 lead. Cheyenne East would respond later in the quarter and a 30-yard gallop to the end zone from Keysshawn Brown. The extra point was missed so the Thunderbirds trailed 7-6.

Drube found Herther for another TD in the 2nd quarter that covered 10 yards to make it 14-6. Once again, East responded with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone from Brown but the the two-point try was no good so it was a 14-12 game at the halftime intermission.

Cheyenne East found some traction in the 3rd quarter on a 3-yard run for a score from Nolan Horton and the two-point try was good giving the T-Birds a 20-14 lead. Horton followed that up with a 2-yard TD pass to Clayton Zahn but the point after was missed so East held on to a 26-14 lead. Campbell County made it a game again on a 12-yard touchdown catch from Trent Rosenau and it was 26-21.

In the 4th quarter, The Camels recorded a safety on a bad snap in punt formation so it was getting really interesting with East leading 26-23. With just over a minute and a half left, Rosenau got into the end zone from 2 yards out to give the Camels a 3-point lead. The Campbell County defense held on from there as the Camels finished the regular season 8-1.

Campbell County will host Rock Springs in the quarterfinal round of the 4A playoffs while Cheyenne East at 7-2 will host Thunder Basin in round one on Friday. We have some stellar photos of the contest from Kellie Jo Allison and you can take a look in our gallery below. Enjoy!
