PhotoFest: Chey. East Holds off Chey. Central in 4A Rivalry Game
Cheyenne East and Cheyenne Central met on the gridiron for the 75th time on Friday night with East posting their 9th straight win in the series 23-15. This was a hard-fought game with plenty of emotion plus intensity and that's exactly what you want to see in a rivalry game.
Central opened the scoring in the 2nd half with a 2 run for a touchdown from Bryson Filbin to give the Tribe a 6-0 lead. Central tacked on a field goal to bump the lead to 9 and East responded with a field goal of their own so the T-Birds trailed 9-3 at the intermission.
Keyshawn Brown jump-started the East offense in the 3rd quarter with a 3-yard run for a score and a 34-yard gallop to the end zone to give the Thunderbirds a 17-9 advantage. Central came right back with a 90-yard kick-off return for a touchdown from Nathan Brenchley to cut the East lead to 17-15.
Nolan Horton got into the end zone from the 6-yard line in the 4th quarter to put East in front 23-15 which was set up by an interception. The T-Birds picked off another pass in the last half-minute to preserve the win.
East has won 6 of 7 and will almost certainly locked down a first-round home playoff game. The T-birds will be on the road at Rock Springs this week. Central has lost 6 of 7 and is in danger of not making the 4A playoffs. They sit a game behind Laramie and Thunder Basin with 2 games to play.
