Cheyenne’s Mathis-Breitkopf and Brokaw are the WyoPreps Athlete of the Week Winners [VIDEO]
For the first time, one school swept the WyoPreps Athlete of the Week Award honors presented by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wyoming.
Sophomore tennis player Hailey Mathis-Breitkopf and senior cross-country runner Bridger Brokaw from Cheyenne Central High School earned the award for the week of Aug. 28 through Sept. 2, 2023. Performances do not carry over to next week
The defending state champion at No. 2 singles, Mathis-Breitkopf had another dominant performance with a 6-0 and 6-1 victory over an opponent from Sheridan.
The nomination stated that Mathis-Breitkopf remained undefeated on the season with her win and that she had not lost a set or a match in her high school career.
Brokaw captured the Wyoming Invitational in Cheyenne at the Little America cross-country course last Saturday. His winning time was 16:15.50, six seconds faster than the runner-up. Brokaw finished first among 212 runners in the race. It was his second straight win this season. He also led Cheyenne Central to the team title.
The nomination said that Brokaw showed poise and determination on a difficult course to finish first amongst a large field of mainly out-of-state competitors. He also helped the Indians win the team championship. Brokaw has two of the eight-fastest times this season.
WyoPreps spoke with both Cheyenne Central student-athletes on Wednesday and discussed their performances on the court and course last week. Mathis-Breitkopf touched on her win, how she maintains her high level of play, and how the match is more about her than her opponent. Brokaw knew his win was good, considering how difficult the course was and the number of competitors. He also mentioned the team culture in the Central program, Coach Wilde’s expertise, and more in the video at the top of the story.
The WyoPreps Athlete of the Week nominations are accepted each week from 5 p.m. on Fridays through 9 a.m. on Mondays. Anyone can nominate a student-athlete or team. Winners are announced each Wednesday.
