The 2021 Class ‘A’ American Legion Baseball state tournament began on Saturday in Cheyenne with one close game and three blowouts.

The best game was the opening game, which was won by the Powell Pioneers, 5-3, in 9 innings, over the Douglas Cats.

Powell tied the game with a run in the sixth inning, at 2-2. Douglas had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh, but Trey Stenerson came out and struck out the next two batters. Each team scored in the eighth. An error and a sacrifice bunt led to Powell’s go-ahead runs in the ninth. With two on and one out for Douglas, a strikeout and a ground out ended the game.

Stenerson and Ashton Brewer, who led off the ninth with a double, spoke to WyoPreps.

In the second game, Wheatland scored eight times in the last two frames of a 10-0 victory over Lovell in five innings.

Jake Hicks had three hits, which included two doubles, and four RBI’s, while Adam Suko had a pair of triples and drove in three runs. Three pitchers combined on a 2-hit shutout.

Hicks and Suko chatted with WyoPreps about the victory.

The third game saw Cody explode for 11 runs in the first inning of a 12-2 victory in five innings against Torrington.

The Tigers struck for two runs in the first, but Jackson Schroeder’s 3-run triple gave the Cubs the lead for good. Cody capitalized on eight walks and six batters hit by a pitch. Schroeder got the win on the mound with seven strikeouts. Torrington out-hit the Cubs, 5-4.

In the nightcap or game four of Day 1, the Cheyenne Hawks drubbed the Green River Knights, 14-0 in six innings.

After an early 2-0 lead, Cheyenne scored four in the third for a 6-0 advantage. With a 7-0 lead, the Hawks doubled their score in the sixth. Nick Colgan led the Cheyenne offense with three hits and three RBI’s. Ethan Reisdorfer, Auggie Lain, and Kade Coates added three hits apiece, as the Hawks finished with 16 hits and capitalized on four Green River errors.

The Day 2 match-ups, on Sunday, July 25, 2021, begin with two elimination games. Lovell will play Green River at 10 a.m., followed by Douglas versus Torrington at 1 p.m. In the winner’s bracket, Cheyenne takes on Wheatland at 4 p.m., while Cody will face Powell at 7 p.m.
