WyoPreps Game of the Week: #2 East at #1 Sheridan [VIDEO]
History is on the line Friday night! In a one-two showdown in Class 4A, the WyoPreps Big School Game of the Week has top-ranked Sheridan hosting No. 2 Cheyenne East at Homer Scott Field. Both teams are off to 3-0 starts, but the storyline centers around the Broncs. With a victory, Sheridan would set a new state record with their 35th consecutive victory. The last team to beat the Broncs was Sheridan in the 2021 regular season, 24-21.
Sheridan has victories over South, Thunder Basin, and Natrona County. They’ve only allowed seven points in three games with two shutouts. The Thunderbirds have victories over Laramie, South, and Thunder Basin. Cheyenne East is outscoring opponents by 44.7 points per game.
Sheridan head coach Jeff Mowry and East head coach Chad Goff spoke to WyoPreps in a preview of the game. Mowry discussed his teams’ start to the year, their dynamic offense with multiple playmakers, their defensive prowess, the Thunderbirds, and how getting the record could be awesome, but it’s not their focus. Goff spoke about his team’s continued improvement, being ready for all three phases of the game against Sheridan, his thoughts on the Broncs, and their ground attack with four key players.
Cheyenne East has the No. 1 offense and No. 1 defense in Class 4A. The T-Birds are averaging 365 yards per game on offense and allow only 137 yards per game on defense. Sheridan counters with the No. 2 offense and defense. The Broncs average 333 yards per game on offense and give up 143 yards per game on defense.
Garrett Way and Kelten Crow are a 1-2 punch for Sheridan on the ground. They average 123 yards per game rushing, and both are over 6.5 yards per carry. Ty Gilbertson throws for just over 100 yards per game and has 3 TDs with 2 interceptions. Way is the top defender at 12.3 defensive points per game for the Broncs.
For East, they have three running backs in the top 10 of rushing with Keyshawn Brown, Tanner Stehwien, and Anthony Pacheco. The trio averages nearly 177 yards per game and has a combined 9 rushing touchdowns. Nolan Horton adds 119 yards per game through the air. Hunter Sallee is No. 6 in 4A in defensive points per game at 14.7.
Sheridan leads the all-time series, 34-15, according to wyoming-football.com. The first meeting was in 1960. The Broncs won both games last year, 44-37 in the regular season, and 31-3 in the last year’s 4A state championship game.
The 50th meeting between the Broncs and the Thunderbirds is at 6 o’clock at Homer Scott Field in Sheridan.
