Six New Champions at the 2024 Wyoming State Golf Championships

A mix of favorites and first-timers won the 2024 golf state championships in Wyoming on Saturday. There was also a mix of close finishes and easy victories among the individuals and teams. The winners were freshman Tazlynn Wagner of Kemmerer and senior Hayden Overfield of Thermopolis in Class 2A. The 3A state champs were Maddie Brace of Douglas and Wheatland’s Tate Nichols. 4A’s champs were Jordyn Horsley of Star Valley and Evanston’s Ryker Lind.

CLASS 2A

Wagner fired rounds of 75 and 78 for a two-day total of 153 at Kendrick Golf Course in Sheridan, which set a 2A state record. She won by 16 shots over defending champion Savanah Peterson of Sundance, who fired a 169. Ten Sleep’s Kelsie Griffin was a distant third place at 196. The Sundance girls won the team crown with a total of 594. It was the third in school history. That was 26 shots ahead of Thermopolis. Tongue River took third place.

Overfield’s victory in the boys’ division made it six state champions in the last seven years for the Thermopolis Bobcats. He shot 82 and 78 for a 160 total and won by one stroke. The top four were separated by three shots. Kemmerer’s Trevan Benson and Easton Lewis of Tongue River tied for second at 161. Defending champion Logan Timberman of Upton placed fourth at 163. The Thermopolis Bobcats continued their team domination in Class 2A. They made it six titles in the last seven seasons with a team total of 722. Thermopolis won its 11th championship in school history. The Bobcats beat second-place Kemmerer (736) by 14 shots. Sundance finished third.

CLASS 3A

For the first time in four years, this classification enjoyed new state champs. Maddie Brace of Douglas posted a nine-shot victory. She had rounds of 82 and 88 for her first state title. Lander’s Keigann Watson came in second at 179, and Addison Bettinger was third with a two-day total of 180. Brace led Doulgas to the team title, which was only the second in school history and the first since 1990. The final team score was 554. Lander (605) and Cody (612) were second and third in the girls’ division, respectively.

Wheatland sophomore Tate Nichols won his first state championship at Rochelle Ranch Golf Course in Rawlins. He shot 71 and 68 for a two-round total of 139. He won by 16 shots. His win helped the Bulldogs roll to the sixth title in school history and the first since 2016. Lander’s Sequeil Lozier took second place, individually, at 155. Brecken Sandlian of Wheatland placed third at 158. The Bulldogs finished with a team score of 611 and won by 70 shots. Lander was second at 671, and Worland placed third at 687.

CLASS 4A

Jordyn Horsley of Star Valley took full advantage of her home course and rolled to the girls’ medalist honor with a total score of 148. She had rounds of 72 and 76 and won by 10 shots. Shelbi Gardner of Sheridan came in second at 158. Scarlet Amdor of Jackson and Khloe Romo from Kelly Walsh tied for third at 169. Evanston captured the girls’ team championship in their first year back in Class 4A. It was the third team title in school history and the first since 2014. The top four girls’ teams were separated by seven shots. Sheridan was second at 522, and Kelly Walsh was third at 525.

Ryker Lind of Evanston capped his senior season with a state championship. He shot 66 and 68 over the 36 holes for a total of 134. That was good for a seven-shot victory. Jaxon Burr of Campbell County and Nash Coleman of Cheyenne East finished in a tie for second place at 141. Campbell County won the team crown at 599. That was their fifth championship in school history and first since 1983. Evanston placed second at 608, and East came in third at 609.
