The Lander girls and Jackson boys took the team titles on Friday and Saturday at the 2023 Wyoming High School Nordic Skiing State Championships in Jackson.

Lander scored 213 points and held off Jackson to win their first girls’ championship since 2010. It was the 11th title in school history. The victory by the Tigers ended an 11-year run for the Bronc girls.

The Jackson boys made it five straight state championships. They scored 218 points and won their 34th title in school history. The Broncs rallied from third place after the first day and scored 123 points in the freestyle race to finish at the top of the podium again.

Individually, there were three state champions on the trails.

Natrona County’s Ally Wheeler swept both races.

She won the 5km classic on Friday by nearly a minute. Wheeler crossed the finish line at 17:30.9. Jackson’s Abigail Murphy was second at 18:27.2. Lander’s Ameya Eddy took third place at 18:43.5. Aurora Stiles from Jackson was fourth at 18:46.8. Elisa Wachob of Cody came in fifth at 19:48.6.

Wheeler won the 10km freestyle race on Saturday at 34:23.4. Murphy took second again. She was just over 23 seconds behind at 34:47. Eddy placed third at 36:22.2. Kayley Alicke of Sheridan finished fourth at 36:48.7. In fifth was Stiles at 37:56.

The boys had two different race winners.

Sam Sinclair of Jackson captured the 5km Friday classic race at 15:29.5. Lander had the next two skiers. Otus Beason was second at 16:16.4. Diego Lobatos crossed the finish line at 16:24.1. The fourth-place skier was Jack Voos from Laramie at 16:24.7. In fifth was Kalel Brubaker of Natrona County at 16:28.3.

Lander’s Bennett Hutchison won the state title in the 10km freestyle race on Saturday. His time was 30:18.3. Sinclair took second, five seconds back, at 30:23.2. Lobatos took third again at 30:30.4. Luke Schmidt of Kelly Walsh placed fourth at a time of 30:49.1, and Jackson’s Alyosha Billimoria at 30:53.2.

After Lander in the girls’ team standings was Jackson at 204 points. Kelly Walsh was third at 159 points. Natrona County grabbed the fourth-place trophy with 120 points.

In the boys’ team standings, Lander and Laramie tied for second with 198 team points. Kelly Walsh came in fourth at 175 points.
