PhotoFest: #2 Sheridan Knocks off #1 Cheyenne East in 4A Football
It was the Battle of the Titans in 4A football on Friday as #1 Cheyenne East played host to #2 Sheridan. The East offense operates very quickly and marched down the field on their opening possession, capped by a Drew Jackson touchdown run to give the Thunderbirds a 7-0 lead. Sheridan countered with a field goal after a long kick-off return from Cody Dunham so it was 7-3 after 1.
The 2nd quarter was eventful with turnovers and touchdowns. Sheridan's Dane Steel had a tremendous game and he ran into the end zone from 19 yards out to put the Broncs in front 10-7. East responded with a 12-yard TD connection from Cam Hayes to Renton Jensen so just like that it was 14-10.
Sheridan put the pedal to the metal later in the 2nd quarter as quarterback Dominick Berrettini tossed a 52-yard touchdown pass to Steel which was followed by a 6-yard run for a score from Terran Grooms so the Broncs were in good shape leading 23-14. The Thunderbirds came right back as Hayes found Jensen again for a TD that covered 9 yards so at the break it was 23-21 Sheridan.
Dane Steel set the tone for the 2nd half, returning the opening kick 99 yards for a touchdown which stunned the East faithful and the Bronc lead was 30-21. Steel added a 20-yard run for a score with East countering with a 19-yard TD strike from Hayes to David Hondel. Sheridan held a 37-27 lead after 3 quarters of play.
The T-Birds inched closer with a field goal in the 4th quarter but Sheridan put together a time-consuming drive as Steel scored from the 1 to make it 44-30. Near the end of the game, Hayes got in from the doorstep to make it 44-37. Sheridan recovered that on-side kick to preserve the victory.
Sheridan is 6-0 on the year and will host Casper-Kelly Walsh on Friday. East drops to 5-1 and the Thunderbirds will play their rival Cheyenne Central on Friday. We have some video highlights to share and some photos as well in our gallery below. Enjoy!
