Pine Bluffs rolled into the state tournament as the 2A favorite with just 3 regular-season losses. The Hornets certainly had the talent to win the state title with 2 time, all-state player Sophie Howard and another all-state selection in Hyleigh Fornstrom. In addition to those two, Maddie Fornstrom and Savannah Norman were all-conference so the stage was set for big things at the state tourney. But in the quarterfinal round, Pine Bluffs ran into a red hot Rocky Mountain team who came in as a 4 seed and proceeded to knock off the Hornets 3-2. The final in that match was 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 18-25 and 15-13. It was a shocking upset but Pine Bluffs stayed alive with a win over Tongue River in the consolation round and the lost to Wright 3-2 to end the season 28-5. The Hornets had a whopping 8 seniors on the team so there will be a significant rebuilding effort in 2020.
