PhotoFest: Riverton Edges Powell in 2 Overtimes in 3A Playoffs
In one of the best 1st round playoff games this year in Wyoming High School football, Riverton outlasted Powell 36-35 in two overtimes on Friday night in well well-played 3A game. This was a compelling contest to the max as Riverton at one point trailed 20-0.
Powell produced a 1st quarter touchdown as Cody Siefert barrelled into the end zone from 10 yards out for a 7-0 lead. They increased with lead with a pair of scores in the 2nd quarter from McKale Foley. He had a 13-yard touchdown run and turned in a 54-yard pick-six.
Riverton got back into the game with a dominating 3rd quarter, starting with an interception return for a touchdown by Ryan Cox that covered 18 yards. Quarterback Blake Gantenbein then connected with Kaiden Arnold for 35 yards and a touchdown and then, Hunter Saltsgaver had a 4-yard scamper into the end zone so just like, the Wolverines tied the game at 20.
After a scoreless 4th quarter, the game went to overtime, and on Riverton's 1st possession, Saltsgaver scored on a 10-yard TD run and the 2-point try was good to make it 28-20. Powell responded on their first possession as Siefert scored for the 2nd time in the game and the Panthers converted the 2-point attempt so we were even again at 28.
In the 2nd overtime, Powell's Trevon Abraham got into the end zone from the 1-yard line and the Panthers kicked the extra point to lead 35-28. Riverton needed a TD to stay in the game and got one from Saltagaver from 5 yards out. The Wolverines went for 2 and the win and converted that as Kaiden Arnold caught a pass that gave his team the win in dramatic fashion.
Riverton is 8-2 on the year and will be on the road at Star Valley in the 3A semi-final round on Friday night. Powell turned in a gallant effort on Friday but their season came to an end at 6-4.
