It’s been a mix of ups and downs for the Rock Springs Sand Puppies so far during this 2020 Wyoming Department of American Legion baseball season.

The Sand Puppies hosted a round-robin tournament at the end of May and have mainly played in and around western or southwestern Wyoming during their first month of action. They’ve played in tournaments in Evanston and Jackson.

WyoPreps recently caught up with Rock Springs manager Rocky Rondinelli and players Gunner Hamblin and Parker Ross in the video above. We discussed the season-to-date, how the players feel their season is progressing, what each player is focusing on depending on their position in the field or at-bat, plus what they need to work on over the next month, and looking forward to hosting the state tournament in Rock Springs. Rondinelli stressed that his young team is still in the process of coming together after the squad lost seven seniors from a season ago.

The Sand Puppies have three players signed to play in college after this season. Ryan Powers is heading to Menlo College in California. Bobby Sains recently committed to Finlandia University in Michigan, and Parker Ross will be playing at Iowa Wesleyan.

Hamblin and Ross lead the team with a .333 batting average. Sains has the most extra-base hits with seven. Ross has 16 stolen bases. Both Powers and Dylan Johnson are 2-3 on the mound this season.

Rock Springs had a tough week last week, as they went winless in seven games. The Sand Puppies were swept in a doubleheader by Laramie before a 0-5 weekend at the Teton Classic in Jackson.

Next up will be the first two conference games of the season. Rock Springs will play at Casper against the Oilers on Wednesday. The Sand Puppies have several conference doubleheaders over the next three weeks.

The 2020 Wyoming Department of American Legion Baseball ‘AA’ State Tournament is in Rock Springs Aug. 5-9.
