The 47th Milward Simpson Award winners are Southeast’s Jordan Stoddard and Cam Burkett from Kelly Walsh.

The two were announced as the Outstanding Female and Male Athletes of the Year Award recipients at a banquet in the Cody Auditorium on Saturday, June 18. Each was chosen from among five girls and five boys’ finalists.

GIRLS WINNER = JORDAN STODDARD

Stoddard is the first-ever winner from Southeast High School in Yoder, WY. In her four-year career, Jordan earned multiple varsity letters in volleyball, indoor track, and outdoor track. She was a two-time all-state and three-time all-conference pick in volleyball. She helped lead the Cyclones to a third-place finish at the 2021 Class 1A state volleyball tournament. Stoddard was selected for the South Team in this summer’s Wyoming Coaches Association all-star volleyball match. In indoor track, Jordan was all-state and all-conference four times during her prep career. She won state championships in the high jump, long jump, and 4x100 meter relay. Stoddard holds six school records in indoor track. Stoddard also holds the Cheyenne Central High School record in the high jump. In 2022, Jordan set the long jump record at the University of Wyoming’s War Memorial Fieldhouse. She was also invited to the prestigious Simplot Games for the high jump and 400-meter dash. Stoddard also competed in the South Dakota State University Marske High School Invitational, where she set new meet records in the high jump and long jump and was named the Most Valuable Female Athlete. In outdoor track, Jordan was a three-time all-state and all-conference selection. In 2019, she was the Southeast District Track Athlete of the Year, and Best of the West Classic Outstanding Female Athlete, where she set a new meet high jump record of 5-6. Her 2020 season was canceled due to the virus. In 2021, Stoddard was the Best of the West Classic champion in the high jump with a new meet record of 5-8. She also won the long jump at that meet (17-1.75). Jordan was the Class 1A state champion in the high jump and long jump. She was a “Best of the Best” award winner with a new 1A state record in the long jump at 19-4.75. In the 2022 season, Stoddard was the Southeast District Track Athlete of the Year and Southeast Senior Athlete of the Year. She won state championships in the high jump, long jump, 100-meters, and 200-meters. Stoddard will be attending South Dakota State University starting this fall. She will be on a track scholarship and plans to major in Animal Science with a minor in Agricultural Business.

BOYS WINNER = CAM BURKETT

Burkett is the third winner from Kelly Walsh High School in Casper. He earned multiple varsity letters in football, indoor track, and outdoor track. He also played hockey. Burkett was a two-time all-state and all-conference football player for the Trojans. In his junior season of 2020, Cam recorded the longest touchdown run in school history of 99 yards. He was selected to the Casper Star Tribune’s Super 25 Team as a running back. In 2021 (senior season), Burkett finished with 1,652 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns. He led KW in rushing yards, receiving yards, and return yards. He played in the 49th Wyoming Shrine Bowl on June 11, 2022. In indoor track, Cam was all-state as a senior and took second place at the state indoor track meet in the shot put with a toss of 58-7.5. Burkett also played hockey during the 2021-22 season and tallied 17 points in only 11 games. He was a four-time all-state selection during outdoor track. In 2021, Burkett anchored Kelly Walsh’s state championship 4x100 meter relay time that had a time of 43.19 seconds. He was also the 4A state champion in the shot put with a toss of 61-1, which earned him the “Best of the Best” title at the state track meet. In 2022, Burkett was all-state in both the shot put and discus. He won the shot-put state championship with a new state record of 65-10.25, which broke the old record by over two feet, and earned “Best of the Best” in that event. Burkett was runner-up in the discus with a toss of 166-06. He holds school records at KWHS in both the shot put and discus events. Burkett will be attending the University of Wyoming on a track scholarship this fall.

The Milward Simpson Award is considered the most prestigious award a prep athlete can earn in Wyoming.
