Cheyenne Central certainly faced some adversity in the 4A Girls State Tournament, yet managed to win the State Championship with a big 49-30 decision over Sheridan on Saturday night in Casper. The Tribe did not have a great shooting performance on Saturday going 2-19 from the 3-point line plus, one of their leading scorers Izzy Kelly was 1-13 from the field. Taylin Wade, who was averaging 7 points a game missed a vast majority of the State Tournament with an injury.

Karson Tempel and the rest of her team saved the day with inspired play as the Tribe won a State Title for the first time since 2008. Tempel was 9-21 from the field and threw in 21 points while Ava Newton made 6 of 7 from the floor and finished with a dozen points. Tempel has been averaging 17 points a game this season and is a terrific all-around athlete so she was a big reason why Cheyenne Central ended the year with a record of 27-2.

We talked with Tempel and Newton after the 4A Girls Championship and dreams came true on Saturday night.
