Skiing at the high school level will finally be full throttle this weekend, as downhill skiers compete for the first time, and cross-country skiers are in action for the third time.

Alpine skiers will be west of Laramie, while Nordic skiers will be back on Casper Mountain.

Alpine Skiing – Laramie Invite

After getting delayed a week, the downhillers will make their 2022 season debut at the Laramie Invitational on Thursday and Friday at Snowy Range Ski Area west of town. The schedule is the same but the competition was moved up by one day.

Thursday will feature the slalom race, while Friday will be the giant slalom. Both days begin at 10 a.m. on Sundance run.

Laramie is hosting Cody, Jackson, Kelly Walsh, Natrona County, and Pinedale for the first races of the year.

LARAMIE SLALOM RESULTS:

Taylor Smith of Jackson edged out her teammate Ava Ulmer by just over two seconds for the win.

Owen Janssen led a 1-2-3 finish for the Broncs. Janssen's teammates Travis D'Mours and Eddie Owens finished second and third.

LARAMIE GIANT SLALOM RESULTS:

Ava Ulmer of Jackson won the girls' division and led a 1-5 sweep by the Broncs. Jackson's Nick Janssen edged out Owen Janssen for the boys' win. The Broncs went 1-2-3 on the boys' side.

Alpine Girls' 2-Day Final Team Scores: Jackson 130, Cody 91, Natrona County 45, Kelly Walsh 41, Laramie 19, Pinedale 16.

Alpine Boys' 2-Day Final Team Scores: Jackson 150, Kelly Walsh 66, Cody 47, Laramie 38, Natrona County 33, Pinedale 8.

Nordic Skiing – High Plains – Casper Mountain Junior Nationals Qualifier & WHSAA race

For the second straight week, cross-country skiers are back in Casper for competition. This race was originally slated for December 2021 but was postponed due to a lack of snow.

The races this weekend serve a dual purpose. Skiers can qualify for the junior nationals based on their age group and time or just compete for the high school season.

A 5km classic race will start at noon on Friday. That’s followed by a 5km skate or freestyle race on Saturday at 10 a.m.

These races are hosted by Kelly Walsh and will include the teams of Cody/Sheridan, Jackson, Lander, Laramie, Natrona County, and Pinedale.

All the skiing will be on the Casper Mountain Trails Center.

FRIDAY CLASSIC RACE RESULTS:

Finley Klinger from Kelly Walsh (23:14.22) and Tristan Smith of Laramie (21:09.97) won the high school varsity races.

Others chose to race for Jr. National Qualifying.

SATURDAY FREESTYLE RACE RESULTS:

Hailie Wilhelm of Natrona County (18:38.59) and Tristan Smith of Laramie (16:08.00) won the high school races.

Other skiers raced in the JNQ.
