Wyoming High School State Tennis Championships: Sept. 24-26, 2020

Wyoming State tennis is set to play this weekend. Gillette is the host of the tournament this year. It will be a three-day event starting on Thursday and ending on Saturday.

CURRENT BRACKETS AND TEAM STANDINGS:

Matches will be played at four venues. Campbell County High School courts, Thunder Basin High School courts, Recreation Center Fieldhouse, and the Bicentennial Park tennis courts.

The play will start at 8:30 a.m on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday at Thunder Basin, the matches will start at 8:30 a.m. At Campbell County, the matches will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Schedule of Matches 

The first two days of matches will have No. 1 Singles at Campbell County High School along with No. 1 boys' doubles. Thunder Basin High School will be host to No. 2 Singles and a couple No. 1 girls' doubles matches. No. 2 doubles will be at Bicentennial Park with some of the No. 1 doubles. The No. 3 doubles teams will be at the Rec Center Fieldhouse.

The third day of play is dependent on the weather forecast. The minimum temperature must be 50 degrees and the wind must be less than 15 mph if the matches are to be played outsides. Otherwise, the matches will be moved indoors to the Rec Center Fieldhouse.

Defending Champions Teams

The Powell Panthers boys teams are set to defend their team title this season. The Panthers won in 2019. Powell had a difficult regional this year but hope to improve this weekend. Kelly Walsh and Green River are the top title contenders this season. Kelly Walsh won the North Regional tournament hosted by Cody. Green River won the South Regional tournament hosted by themselves. Both of these teams are looking to capitalize on their success in the regional tournament to claim the state title.

Cheyenne Central and Sheridan girls teams shared the 2019 team tennis titles. Both of these teams are set going to defend their titles this season. Central has won the title the past three seasons and is on its way to four straight. Central won the South Regional tournament in Green River convincingly. Kelly Walsh looks like it is going to be the top challenger to Central and Sheridan in hopes of repeating. Kelly Walsh won the North Regional tournament hosted by Cody.

Defending Champion Players

This state tournament does have champions looking to defend their titles.

Emily Needham of Cheyenne Central looks to cap off her senior season by repeating as No. 1 Singles champion. Needham also won a title in 2018 as a No. 2 Singles.

The duo of Jefferson Neary and Austin Robertson are both seniors and plan to repeat as No. 1 doubles champions. Neary and Robertson also won the No. 2 doubles title in 2018.

Ella Laird of Sheridan was the No. 2 Singles champion but is in the No. 1 Singles bracket this year.

Parker Phillips of Kelly Walsh was one-half of the 2019 No. 2 doubles and is returning in the No. 2 doubles with a new partner.

Ashlynn Staggs and Soffy Anderson were both a part of titles last season. Staggs was a part of the No. 2 doubles champions. Anderson was a part of the No. 3 doubles champions. This season they joined together and are now in the No. 1 doubles bracket.
