The prep tennis season came to an end for 2024 in Gillette and there were more than a few shining moments. In the girls' #1 Singles state championship match, Cheyenne Central's Hailey Mathis-Breitkopf rolled to a 6-0 6-0 win over Jackson's Carolina Brokaw. She did not lose a single match during the regular season and did not lose a set at the State Tournament. Mathis-Breitkopf is used to winning as she was the reigning #2 Singles state champion for the last 2 years.

On the boy's side, Paulo Mellizo from Laramie took 2nd place at last year's State Tournament in #1 Singles, losing to Andrew Locke of Cheyenne South and he was tough to beat.

Mellizo had to work hard for his state championship in 2024 in #1 Singles, taking care of Colin Crecelius of Cheyenne East 6-3, 4-6, and 6-2. That 2nd set was the only set he lost in the state tournament and that was motivation enough for the rest of the championship match.

We talked with Mathis-Breitkopf and Mellizo on Saturday at Campbell County High School and they were certainly happy and relieved at the same time.
