A volleyball player and a pair of football players earned the WyoPreps Athlete of the Week award for week four of the 2024-25 high school sports year. The latest winners were Kyan Lawlar of Evanston volleyball, Cale Dauwen of Pinedale football, and Bridger Cozzens of Little Snake River football. Lawlar helped the Red Devils to one of the best records for a Wyoming school in the Border Wars volleyball tournament last weekend. Both Dauwen and Cozzens enjoyed big games on the gridiron and helped their teams to blowout wins.

Girls Winner

Lawlar helped Evanston to a 6-2 record at the Border Wars volleyball tournament the Red Devils hosted last Friday and Saturday. The sophomore had 51 kills, 64 digs, and 18 service aces. Evanston beat Cheyenne South, 3A Lyman, Bonneville (ID) No. 2, Tabiona (UT), 2A Kemmerer, and Manila (UT). They lost Bonneville (ID) No. 1. and South Summit (UT).

WyoPreps chatted with Kyan about her and the team’s play during the weekend tournament. She felt they played well, described her play, what made her serves so effective to get 18 aces, what it’s like to play for her mom, what she’s working on, and more.

Boys Winners

Dauwen ran for six touchdowns in Pinedale’s 48-12 victory over 3A Rawlins. He finished with 172 yards rushing and averaged 6.9 yards per rush. His rushing total was the best among 11-man players in Week 1 of the 2024 season. His longest rush was 46 yards against the Outlaws. Dauwen also contributed five tackles on defense.

WyoPreps visited with Cale about his performance. He gave a lot of credit to his offensive line, described what he saw on his scoring plays, how the Wranglers are looking to take that next step in a competitive 2A West Conference, and more.

Cozzens scored four touchdowns in all three phases of the game and helped the Rattlers beat top-ranked Burlington, 70-18, last Saturday in Baggs. He returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown in the first minute of the game, which gave Little Snake River the lead for good. Cozzens added a TD rush from 28 yards out, caught a TD, and returned a kickoff 57 yards for a score. He added 13 tackles on defense, which included two tackles for loss and two sacks.

Cozzens told WyoPreps how this victory set the tone for their season. Overall, he felt it was a good performance for game No. 1, described how they used their team athleticism to their advantage, discussed some of his big plays, how much support there is in Baggs, and more.

Little Snake River vs. Burlington Football 2024

The No. 2 Little Snake River Rattlers hosted the No. 1 Burlington Huskies to open the 2024 high school football season in the 6-man division.
