The Cheyenne Central girls and Sheridan boys are at the top of the standings after the first day of the 2022 Wyoming High School Indoor Track State Championships.

Two state records fell on the first day of this year's state meet, and there was one surprise non-result.

Sheridan's Carter McComb was part of two state records. He ran 6.47 seconds in the 55-meter dash prelims. That eclipsed the old state record of 6.48 by Wyatt Moore from Star Valley in 2019.

McComb also ran a leg on Sheridan's victorious Sprint Medley Relay that broke the state record. The Broncs' time was 3.39.57. That beat the old mark by .09 seconds, which was held by Rock Springs and happened in 2018. Other members of that relay for Sheridan included Dominick Berretini, Patrick Aasby, and Reese Charest.

Also, Sheridan's Ryan Karajanis became a three-time champ. He captured the title in the pole vault for the third straight year. Karajanis cleared 15-6.5 and won by over a foot-and-a-half.

Event winners on the girls' side included Cheyenne South's, Darby Downham. She won the 400-meters in 1:01.48. Central's Kaya Pillivant ran 11:29.08 and won the 3200-meters. Dulce Carroll from Sheridan cleared 5-4 and won the high jump. In a bit of a surprise, two-time high jump champion Jordan Stoddard from Torrington failed to record a height in the event and didn't place. Stoddard did win the long jump with a leap of 18-7.5, which was just one inch shy of a state record.

Cheyenne East won the girls' 4x800 meter relay at 9:55.52. Cheyenne Central won the Sprint Medley Relay. Their time was 4:19.53.

Campbell County's Sydalee Brown had the fastest time in the prelims of the 55 and 200-meters. Eva Nitschke from Rawlins had the fastest qualifying time in the 55-meter hurdles. McKenna Hayes of Campbell County had the best toss in the prelims of the shot put with a distance of 41-6.75.

Kellen McCoul of Kelly Walsh finished first place in the triple jump (43-9). Central won the boys' 4x800 meter relay (8:12.80).

McComb had the fastest qualifying times in the 55 and 200-meters for tomorrow's finals. Jesus Quintero of Evanston came through with the top time in the 55-meter hurdles in the prelims. Cam Burkett from Kelly Walsh topped the qualifying in the shot put at 59-6.5.
