Two state champions from indoor track were selected as the WyoPreps Athletes of the Week. Thunder Basin senior Grace Miller and Cheyenne East junior Dayton Rhoades got the awards based on their performances. Miller won two events and tied a state record, while Rhoades was the only individual to win three events that weekend. WyoPreps analyzed performances from the competition week of March 2 through March 7, 2026, and chose these two student-athletes. Previous weeks are not part of the decision.

Miller performed her best at the right time, and she helped her team to a state championship. Grace won the 55- and 200-meter dash races at the indoor track state championships in Gillette. She tied the state record with her victory in the 55 meters at 7.10 seconds. That equaled the mark set by Jerayah Davis back in 2013. Miller crossed the finish line first in the 200 meters at 25.26 seconds. Grace also ran a leg on Thunder Basin’s title-winning 4x200-meter relay. That effort aided Thunder Basin’s first girls’ indoor track team championship in school history.

WyoPreps caught up with Miller at the state basketball championships to reflect on how she performed at the indoor track state championships. She was pleased with how she ran, remarked on tying Davis’s record, discussed the keys to each race, what it meant to go out on top, and more.

Rhoades had a big weekend that helped his team to a title, as well. Dayton was the only track athlete in the state who won three events. He set a new state record in his victory in the 55-meter dash at 6.46 seconds. Rhoades took the title in the 200 meters at 22.02 seconds. His final event win came in the long jump. His best leap was 23-4.50, which was nearly a foot farther than the runner-up. Dayton also ran a leg on the Thunderbirds’ 4x400-meter relay. They placed fourth. When it was done, Rhoades led Cheyenne East to its second boys’ indoor track team championship.

WyoPreps visited with Dayton about a week after the indoor track state championships. He discussed his three event wins, setting a new state record, what he felt the key was with each event, and more.

Congratulations to Grace and Dayton on being chosen as the WyoPreps Athletes of the Week!
