Mortensen Makes History, Roberson Races to Glory as WyoPreps Athletes of the Week [VIDEO]
A standout champion wrestler and a skilled cross-country skier were selected as the latest WyoPreps Athletes of the Week. Pinedale senior Kaylea Mortensen and Kelly Walsh senior Everett Roberson were the winners based on last week’s performances. Mortensen made history at the Ron Thon Memorial Wrestling Tournament in Riverton, and Roberson was dominant in his first two races of the high school season. WyoPreps reviewed performances from the competition week of January 26 through January 31, 2026, and chose these two student-athletes. Previous weeks are not part of the decision.
WYOPREPS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK WINNERS 2-5-26
Girls’ Winner
Mortensen became the first female wrestler to win four Ron Thon belts after she captured the 130-pound title last Friday in Riverton. She pinned all five of her opponents en route to accomplishing this rare feat. Only five other wrestlers (all males) have achieved what Kaylea was able to last weekend. She won three matches last Thursday and two more on Friday to earn her fourth crown. Mortensen’s feat helped Pinedale take third in the team standings. She improved her record to 26-2 this season.
WyoPreps visited with the senior to reflect on her feat. She said it was a goal for her this season, described her reaction, how wrestling is a family fascination, discussed areas she wants to improve, and more.

Boys’ Winner
Roberson won the first two races he skied in during the 2026 high school Nordic season in Wyoming. At the Trail Creek Invitational in Jackson, Everett won the 5km skate or freestyle race last Friday with a time of 12:05.7. He was 5.1 seconds ahead of the next skier. Roberson followed that with a dominant win in the 10km classic race last Saturday. He crossed the finish line in 27:09.9, and that was 1:34.6 ahead of the next skier.
Everett discussed last weekend with WyoPreps on Thursday. He felt he skied well in his first high school races, described what the conditions were like, how that impacted his approach, what the keys were for each race, his love for the sport, and more.
Congratulations to Kaylea and Everett on being chosen as the WyoPreps Athletes of the Week!
