Big Finishes Lead Dean, Wernick to WyoPreps Athlete of the Week Recognition [VIDEO]

Two seniors who led their teams to big finishes were selected as the WyoPreps Athletes of the Week. Laramie senior Rachael Dean and Cheyenne Central senior Teagan Wernick were the winners. WyoPreps looked back on performances from the competition week of May 4 through May 9, 2026, and chose these two student-athletes. Previous weeks are not part of the decision.

WYOPREPS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK WINNERS 5-14-26

Girls’ Winner

Dean led Laramie to a conference title, an undefeated conference record, and the program's first 20-win season. Rachael played in only three of Laramie’s four games. She had a .455 batting average. Dean had two doubles and two home runs, walked three times, and struck out only once. Rachael finished with 6 RBIs and 10 runs scored. Her OPS was 1.753, and her slugging percentage was 1.182. Defensively, Dean was perfect, with a 1.000 fielding percentage. She recorded 17 put-outs and four assists. One of her key hits was a three-run home run in the first inning against Rock Springs that put the Lady Plainsmen in front for good. Laramie went on to win that game, 8-2, and essentially clinched the conference championship with that victory.

WyoPreps caught up with Dean, and she reflected on her performance. She felt she played pretty well, described her approach at the plate, her home run prowess this season (she leads the state), the team’s success, her role at catcher and calling pitches, and more.

Boys’ Winner

Wernick helped the Cheyenne Central Indians to a pair of key wins in the final week of the 4A boys’ soccer regular season. They finished 2-0 with wins over Cheyenne South and Laramie. Wernick had three goals and two assists for the week. Teagan scored twice and assisted two other goals versus the Bison and added another goal in the victory over Laramie. He helped the Indians clinch a third-place finish in the 4A East Conference entering the regional tournament.

Wernick spoke to WyoPreps about his two games. He felt good about how he played, took us through his goals and one of his assists, described the Central boys’ soccer team this year, how they’ve adjusted as the season has gone along, some keys in the postseason, and more.
