Cheyenne Central and Sheridan Win 2022 Indoor Track State Titles
The Cheyenne Central girls and Sheridan boys won the 2022 Wyoming High School Indoor Track State Championships on Saturday in Gillette.
The Indians won six events and won the team title by 3.33 points. Cheyenne Central finished with 103.33 team points. Campbell County was second at 100 points. The last two trophies went to Sheridan (72 points) and Natrona County (51 points).
The Broncs were dominant with eight individual victories. They scored 139 team points and won by 64 points over Cheyenne Central (75 points). Kelly Walsh took third with 61 points, while Campbell County placed fourth with 59 team points.
On Saturday, Central’s Sydney Morrell defended her title in the 800 meters. She ran 2:20.83. Brinkley Lewis from Cheyenne Central won the pole vault. She cleared 10-8. Central’s Katie Thomson won the triple jump with a leap of 35-9.50. The Indians won two events on Friday.
Campbell County’s Sydalee Brown was the only two-event winner. She took first place in the 55-meter dash at 7.23 seconds. Brown followed that with a victory in the 200-meters. Her time was 25.89 seconds.
Brown also ran the anchor leg on the Camels’ winning 4x200 meter relay that set a new state record on Saturday with a time of 1:45.38. That broke the old mark set by Campbell County in 2015 which was 1:46.32.
The other individual events winners included Emma Gonzalez from Burns/Pine Bluffs, who won the 1600 meters in 5:16.89. Eva Nitschke of Rawlins captured the 55-meter hurdles in 8.54 seconds. Natrona’s Alesha Lane won the shot put. Her best throw in the finals was 41-00.25.
Cody won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:13.74.
The Sheridan boys were led by senior Carter McComb. He swept the sprint events. McComb won the 55-meters in 6.51 seconds and the 200-meters in 22.56 seconds. He also ran a leg on the Broncs’ winning 4x200 meter relay that cross the finish line in 1:32.63.
Sheridan’s other wins on Saturday were by Austin Akers in the 1600 meters at a time of 4:33.32. Texas Tanner won the shot put with a toss of 58-10. The Broncs also won the 4x400 meter relay at 3:31.13.
Torrington’s Kyland Fuller defended his title in the 800-meters. He won with a time of 2:01.11.
Evanston’s Jesus Quintero was a two-event champion. He finished first in the 55-meter hurdles at 7.80 seconds. In the field events, Quintero won the high jump, as he cleared 6-2 and had the fewest attempts of the competitors.
Campbell County’s Remar Pitter won the long jump with a leap of 23-6.

For the Cheyenne Central girls, this was their third title in the last five years and seventh in school history.
The Sheridan boys won their fourth straight title and fifth in school history.
