State Titles and Records Power Madsen, Monterastelli, and Cranney to WyoPreps Athlete of the Week Awards [VIDEOS]
Two state champion runners and a record-setting swimmer are the latest recipients of the WyoPreps Athlete of the Week awards. Our most recent selections were Cheyenne East junior Maggie Madsen, Buffalo freshman Milan Monterastelli, and Star Valley senior Colton Cranney. Madsen won her second straight cross-country state championship last weekend. Monterastelli set a school, conference, and state record, leading her team to a conference swim title. Finally, Cranney continued Star Valley’s streak of individual winners with the top performance at the cross-country state championships. WyoPreps looked back at performances from the competition week of October 20 through October 25, 2025, and selected these three student-athletes. Previous weeks are not part of the decision.

Girls’ Winners
Cheyenne East junior Maggie Madson won her second consecutive Class 4A girls cross country state title last Saturday in Cheyenne. Battling an injury throughout the season, she persevered and pulled away for the 4A crown. Madsen set a new course record at the Little America Golf Course and Resort of 18:17.7, which topped the mark she set last year by nearly nine seconds.
WyoPreps spoke to Madsen shortly after her race. She is the first of the three interviews from last weekend in the video below.
Milan Monterastelli enjoyed an outstanding conference championship in the 3A North. The freshman set a new school, conference, and 3A record in the 100-breaststroke race at 1:04.33. That eclipsed the old mark of 1:04.81 set by Lyman’s Brynlee Busskohl back in 2020. Milan won that event by over 13 seconds. Monterastelli also captured first place in the 200 IM at 2:15.65 and won by nearly five seconds. She swam the second leg on the conference champion 200-medley relay (1:54.91) that won by 10 seconds, and swam on the 200-freestyle relay that took third. Monterastelli’s effort helped Buffalo win the conference title as a team with 358 points, which was 80 points ahead of the next closest team.
WyoPreps visited with Milan about her performance last weekend in Powell. She discussed the record-setting race, her love of the breaststroke, her win in the IM, the relay victory, the team title, and more in the video at the top of the story.

Boys’ Winner
Cranney won the 4A boys’ cross country state championship last Saturday in Cheyenne. He became the fourth consecutive runner from Star Valley High School to win the title. Cranney crossed the finish line at 15:59.8. He was the only runner among the three classes to get a sub-16-minute time. Colton’s effort helped Star Valley take second in the team standings, only 13 points behind state champion Sheridan.
WyoPreps caught up with Colton after his race. He was happy that he accomplished a goal. Cranney’s interview is the first of the three in the video below.
Congratulations to Maggie, Milan, and Colton on being chosen as the WyoPreps Athletes of the Week!
