The 2024 season will be a fresh start for the Worland Warriors in more ways than one. Worland has a new head coach, Marty Wrage. They also are in a new classification for football, 2A, thanks to the latest enrollment cut-offs from the Wyoming High School Activities Association. The question is, how will the Warriors impact their new division? They are an experienced team capable of being a major player in 2A football.

Last season, Worland went 4-6 in Class 3A and 2-4 in conference games. They have made the playoffs in seven straight seasons but have not advanced past the first round or had a winning record since 2009. Last season, the Warriors struggled on offense and averaged only 120 yards and 8.1 points per game. Defensively, they allowed 303 yards and 32.4 points per game. Although, those numbers were skewed by a few blowout losses.

They return an all-state player in senior Brody Thiel. Also back is all-conference lineman Daniel Lopez and plenty of other personnel, as Worland returns nine starters on offense and defense. Enter new coach Marty Wrage. He was head coach for four years at Greybull and two at Green River, most recently in 2019.

WyoPreps visited Worland’s practice on Wednesday to check out the Warriors. Thiel, Lopez, and Coach Wrage gave us some insight into their preseason preparations for 2024.

Worland has a scrimmage against Upton-Sundance before their first game on Sept. 6 versus old 3A foe, Powell. The Warriors also get Lyman, Lovell, and Kemmerer at home this season. Their road games are at Thermopolis, Pinedale, Mountain View, and Cokeville.

The 2A West Conference has been tough for several years. Add in Worland, and it might be more difficult.
