Pine Bluffs senior Shawn Shmidl will continue his football career at the next level. He recently signed his National Letter of Intent to play at Simpson College in Iowa. Shmidl helped the Hornets to a 10-1 record and the 2024 Class 1A 9-Man Football State Championship last November. Shmidl was a two-time all-state and all-conference selection at Pine Bluffs.

The senior led the 9-man division with 33 catches for 643 yards receiving in the 2024 season. Shmidl was second at 58.5 receiving yards per game. He finished with 12 touchdown catches. Shawn made 75 tackles on defense, which included six tackles for loss and two sacks. He had one interception, a fumble recovery, three pass breakups, and one defensive TD.

In the 9-man title game, Shmidl had two receptions for 14 yards and rushed once for 12 yards. He made five tackles on defense. Two were solo stops, which included one tackle for a loss. Shmidl also had one pass breakup in the championship game. It helped Pine Bluffs beat Lingle-Ft. Laramie, 28-22.

In the 2023 season, Shmidl had 33 receptions for 568 yards and four TDs. He averaged 63.1 receiving yards per game and 17.2 yards per catch. Shmidl made 88 tackles in his junior season. He had seven tackles for loss and four sacks. Shmidl added one fumble recovery and four pass breakups. The Hornets finished 6-3 and fell to eventual champion Big Piney in the first round of the 9-man football playoffs.
