The 2025 Wyoming High School golf season is here. Practice began on Monday, and the first events will happen this week. It is a short six-week season that will wrap up by mid-September. Three champions return to defend their state title, which they won in 2024. That also means there will be three new champions this year.

2025 WYOPREPS HIGH SCHOOL GOLF PREVIEW

While several talented players graduated in the Class of 2025, there is still plenty of talent left to make the new 2025 season one to watch. Two defending champs, Tazlyn Wagner of Kemmerer in 2A girls and Tate Nichols from Wheatland in 3A boys, were runaway winners last fall. Both won by 16 shots over the field. The third defending champion returning is Maddie Brace from Douglas in 3A girls. She posted a nine-shot victory. By contrast, 2A boys and both 4A medalists will be new in 2025.

The teams that won it all a year ago were Sundance, Douglas, and Evanston for the girls, and Thermopolis, Wheatland, and Campbell County for the boys.

Class 2A will finish its 2025 season at the Douglas Community Club. Class 3A has its state championships in Cody at the Olive Glenn Golf Club. Finally, the 4A will conclude this fall season at the Airport Golf Club in Cheyenne. Those championships will be on September 19-20, 2025.

Class 2A

Top Returning Girls Players = Tazlyn Wagner (Kemmerer, defending champion), Kelsie Griffin (Ten Sleep), Savannah Tremain (Tongue River), Lilly Johnson (Thermopolis), Madison Shaffer (Thermopolis), Ruth Needham (Thermopolis), Talitha Winfrey (Tongue River).

Top Girls Teams = Thermopolis, Tongue River, Sundance.

Top Returning Boys Players = Trevan Benson (Kemmerer), Easton Lewis (Tongue River), Owen Watt (Sundance), Porter Watt (Sundance). Trevin Shaffer (Thermopolis), Truatt Strohschein (Wright), Colton Gerler (Wright).

Top Boys Teams = Wright, Kemmerer, Thermopolis, Sundance.

2A Breakdown = Wagner burst onto the scene last year as a freshman and played in some top-tier events over the summer. Expect Tazlyn to be the class of 2A girls’ golf, and perhaps, just girls’ golf in the state, and for the next few years. Griffin and Tremain will be the top contenders. Thermopolis has a big three that will be tough to overcome from a team standpoint. We think the 2A boys is up for grabs. We see 7-10 golfers, who might have a shot at the crown depending on how they play over two days in Douglas. It's not a course that a lot of 2A teams play regularly. Benson rose to contention last year, while Lewis and the Watt brothers would love to make a move to the top. Wright’s got a strong young group who’s moving up, but the stalwarts of Thermopolis and Kemmerer, and even Sundance, might have a shot as a team.

Class 3A

Top Returning Girls Players = Maddie Brace (Douglas), Haylee Nelson (Wheatland), Keigann Watson (Lander), Addison Bettinger (Buffalo), Tayen Wakkuri (Wheatland), Jordan Shumard (Cody), Eliana Hopkin (Cody), Siara Espinosa (Lander), Emery Hernandez (Powell).

Top Girls Teams = Lander, Cody, Wheatland, Powell, Torrington.

Top Returning Boys Players = Tate Nichols (Wheatland), Jacob Miller (Wheatland), Braxton Costello (Pinedale), Carson Krebes (Cody), Cody Fisher (Powell), Hayden Jackson (Lyman), Cooper Myers (Buffalo).

Top Boys Teams = Wheatland, Lander, Pinedale.

3A Breakdown = The 3A girls is top-heavy with talent, as the top five finishers at state in 2024 are back this year. Maddie Brace of Douglas will defend her title, but she lost four teammates who helped the Bearcats win the team crown. Brace has some tough competition from Nelson, Watson, and Bettinger. A few others will also try to play themselves into contention this fall. The 3A girls’ team competition is more open, with several teams having a shot given the right two days. Cody might have a slight edge playing at home in mid-September. Nichols is a heavy favorite to repeat in the boys’ division. He’ll get challenged by his teammate Miller, Costello from Pinedale, and Krebes of Cody. Led by two top-tier players, the Bulldogs have a great chance to repeat as a team.

Class 4A

Top Returning Girls Players = Madison Brown (Evanston), Khloe Romo (Kelly Walsh), Camryn Wagner (Sheridan), Madeline Key (Kelly Walsh), Tylynn McDonald (Riverton).

Top Girls Teams = Sheridan, Evanston, Kelly Walsh.

Top Returning Boys Players = Carson Moniz (Laramie), Jaxon Burr (Campbell County), Cade Peterson (Campbell County), Drew Gemar (Campbell County), Cole Bunting (Sheridan), Jaxon Bratton (Natrona County), Traiven Atkinson (Rock Springs), Porter Stender (Laramie), Gibby Williams (Thunder Basin), Griffin Stender (Laramie).

Top Boys Teams = Campbell County, Laramie.

4A Breakdown = We think any one of the five girls we feel are the top returning players could make a push for the state title. There are also a few dark horses that will play a role in determining this year’s medalist. Evanston might be the defending 4A girls’ champ, but the Red Devils, Sheridan, and Kelly Walsh were not separated by much. The girls’ team crown looks to be more open this fall. Campbell County returns a lot from last year’s team championship. Between Burr, Peterson, and Gemar, you’ve got three top-flight golfers to carry the Camels again. Laramie will try to make a push led by veteran Carson Moniz, after making the state championships for the first time as a team in the new qualifier format. Who challenges for the individual title? Between Moniz, Burr, Peterson, and some other top returning players, this will be a fun race to watch.

We’ll find out who worked on their game over the summer soon enough, but there’s our WyoPreps golf preview. Did we miss someone? Probably. Can you use this as motivation? Sure! In the end, good luck to all the golfers and teams on the course in the 2025 season!
