Green River Girls Basketball Review
There has been a resurgence in girls basketball at Green River thanks to a 4th place finish at the 2021 4A State Tournament. The Wolves qualified for state as the #2 seed from the West and looked impressive right off the bat with a 59-37 win over Cheyenne Central in the quarterfinal round. Green River led this game by as many as 26 points and shot 55% from the field in the 2nd half. Megan Counts led the attack with 16 points on 6-10 from the floor, Kayde Strauss had 12 and Tayana Crowder chipped in 10. The Wolves also helped themselves going 16-27 from the free-throw line.
In the 4A semi-finals, Green River met eventual state champion Cheyenne East. The Wolves dropped this contest 62-50 and played well enough to win. Megan Counts was outstanding with 22 points on 9-14 from the field. Tayana Crowder and Gabrielle Heiser had 8 points apiece. Kayde Strauss wasn't at 100% and played just 16 minutes in this game and not all in their consolation game with Sheridan.
The Wolves lost that 3rd/4th place game to Sheridan 58-46 as Counts as well as Daryn Macy had 13 points each with Kelsi Angelovich contributing a dozen. Sheridan outscored Green River by 10 in the 4th quarter as the Wolves finished the season 16-7.
Megan Counts and Kayde Strauss were named all-state in 4A as Counts averaged 10 points a game and Strauss threw in 13 per contest. Tayana Crowder was an all-conference selection. This program now has 3 straight winning seasons after 11 straight losing seasons. Strauss and Crowder were seniors this year so that's a lot to replace but Counts was a junior this past season so the Wolves should be formidable in 2021-22. Check out of video of this team in the state tournament. Enjoy!
