The Newcastle girls basketball team had an interesting 3A East regional tournament and needed everything they could get to edge Buffalo in the first round and punch their ticket to the state tournament. The Dogies ended up being the #3 seed out of that regional and drew Lander in the quarterfinal round of the state tourney in Casper. Lander came out on top in that game 40-36 as Newcastle shot 26% from the field. They were led in scoring by their offensive machine, Jaylen Ostenson who had 16 points and 7 rebounds. Shelby Tidyman, Mercedes Voelker, and Mackenzie Conzelman each had 6 points.

In the consolation round, Newcastle stayed alive with a 48-38 victory over Mountain View with a much-improved shooting effort. The Dogies went 40% from the field and Ostenson was sensational with 27 points on 8-13 from the field and 10-14 from the free-throw line. She also pulled down 12 rebounds in one of the best individual performances in the entire tournament.

Newcastle took on Wheatland in the 5th/6th place game and lost 46-41 in overtime. Ostenson had 20 for the Dogies and Tiernan Stanton had 8. Ostenson was the 2nd leading scorer in 3A this past season, averaging 19 points a game. So she was an obvious all-state selection. Point guard Shelby Tidyman averaged 7 points a game and earned all-conference designation.

What's incredible is that Ostenson and Tidyman were just sophomores this past season and this team had just one senior. The future looks bright for this program and they will be a team to watch in 2021-22. Take a look at our short video of the Dogies at the State Tournament!
