PhotoFest: Riverton Beats Lander for Keeper of the Gold Trophy
Rivalry games in high school football are always spirited and one of the best rivalries in Wyoming is Riverton vs. Lander. The first quarter was tightly contested as Lander scored on a 65-yard run from Brayden Baker to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead. Riverton responded with a one-yard plunge for a TD from Darrick DeVries. The two-point try was good and the Wolverines were in front 8-7.
Riverton took it up a notch in the 2nd quarter as DeVries hooked up with Ty Sheets for 44 yards and a touchdown but Lander answered with a kick-off return for 100 yards by Finn McFadden, Back came Riverton a 2-yard run to the end zone from DeVries and he followed that up with a scoring pass to Nick McIntosh so the Wolverines went to the locker-room at halftime leading 29-14.
Riverton blew the game open in the 3rd quarter with a trio of touchdowns. DeVries recorded his 3rd rushing touchdown of the game from 4 yards out, Sheets had a 65 journey to the end zone for 6 and DeVries threw his touchdown pass of the game, this time to Jackson Larsen that covered 4 yards. By this time, Riverton led 50-14. Lander scored one more time on a 1-yard run from Hunter Smith-Velarde but that wasn't nearly enough as the Tigers ended up on the losing end 50-21.
Riverton is 2-4 on the year and has won 2 of their last 3. The Wolverines will be in Douglas this week. It has been tough sledding for Lander at 0-6 and the Tigers will travel to Rawlins on Friday. We do have a few photos to share from that game in Lander thanks to Shelli Chance. They can be located in our gallery below. Enjoy!
