The Rocky Mountain girls basketball team won 18 games this past season after winning 21 the previous year. The difference was that the Grizzlies played in the 2A state championship game in 2021, which was their best finish at state since 2000.

Rocky took 2nd place at the 2A West regional tournament and drew Moorcroft in the opening round of the state tournament in Casper. The Grizz outscored the Wolves 16-7 in the 4th quarter to win this one 47-40. Josey Steed had a dozen points for Rocky Mountain and Kiara Jolley had 11.

In the semi-final round, Rocky needed another 4th quarter surge to advance as they got by Lusk 44-39. Victoria Arnold went 5-9 from the field and 5-5 from the free-throw line to finish with 15 points, Taylin Boettcher chipped in 10 on 4-7 from the floor. There were 7 ties and 11 lead changes so it was quite a ballgame.

In the 2A championship game, Rocky Mountain met their long-time rival Wyoming Indian and the Grizzlies dropped a 44-29 decision. Arnold had 8 and Steed had 7 but Rocky as a team shot 26% from the floor in this contest. They did not have the services of all-state player Kiara Jolley who through the course of the season, led the team in scoring, averaging 12 points per game. Josey Steed was another all-state selection for the Grizz with Arnold and Boettcher earning all-conference designation.

Boettcher was a senior but Steed, Jolley, and Arnold return so this will be a team to watch in the 2020-21 season. Check out our short video of Rocky Mountain in the state tournament.
