The final stop on our WyoPreps Preseason Basketball Tour took us through Shoshoni.

The girls were on the wrong end of a lot of close losses last year, while the boys made a big run at regionals and qualified for the state tournament. Both are looking for more success this season.

The Shoshoni Lady Blue is looking to put last season behind them. After not making the state tournament, this squad returns its entire roster and hopes to make a run in 2023. Two of those returners were all-conference last season, Hailey Donelson and Sonja Post.

WyoPreps spoke to those two senior players, plus head coach Max Mills about the prospects in the 2022-23 season.

Mills knows he has a veteran squad with ability, so he’s hoping they take that next step. He discussed how practices have gone, what they’re focusing on, areas this veteran can grow in, and more.

Donelson and Post are excited about a new season. They believe this team has the potential to do some good things. In our conversation, they touched on practice, the chemistry they have, the keys to taking that next step, some fun items, and more.

The Shoshoni Wranglers made a big run last year and won the 2A West Regional tournament to qualify for the state tournament. That surge was short, as they went 0-2 at the state tourney.

Shoshoni was 13-14 last season and 3-3 in conference games. They return Alex Mills, who was an all-state selection and the 2A Northwest Player of the Year. Trey Fike was an all-conference pick in 2022.

WyoPreps visited with Mills, Fike, and head coach Jonathan Wakelin to preview the new season.

Wakelin is in his third season at the helm of the program. He knows they’ve returned some experience but also lost some key pieces. He described how preparations are going, his focus on this team early, an outlook on Class 2A boys, and more.

Mills and Fike are hoping for a good season, but they know it will be tough. They discussed how practices have gone thus far, what the emphasis has been early on, what it will take for them to be successful, and more.

Shoshoni begins its new season at the Strannigan Classic in Riverton and Lander this weekend.
