It has been an off-season filled with change for American Legion Baseball in Wyoming, and the 2023 season is just one week away.

Teams have changed levels. There are new teams in the Double-A and Single-A levels, and a couple of new managers.

Last fall Evanston was moved down to the Single-A level, while Riverton moved up to Double-A. Then, Riverton opted out for various reasons, which left only seven teams at the Double-A level.

Recently, with an approved vote by the Double-A coaches, the Cheyenne Hawks will fill the void at the Double-A level for the next three years. The Hawks are still classified as Single-A but have been opted up by Cheyenne. The Hawks are filling the scheduling void of Riverton for Double-A conference games.

Double-A will remain one conference for the eight teams at that level. Their state tournament will be in Jackson on July 24-28, 2023. Gillette is once again the host of the Northwest ‘AA’ Regional Championships on August 2-6, 2023.

Wyoming American Legion Baseball welcomes a new team in Lander for 2023. After a 16-year absence, the Lander Legends will be classified at the Single-A level of American Legion Baseball in the state.

Also new for 2023, the Single-A East Conference teams have decided to form one conference like the Double-A level. That means Buffalo, Casper, Douglas, Gillette, Sheridan, Torrington, and Wheatland will be in one league. The Single-A District Tournament was moved to Douglas and will be on July 19-21, 2023.

The West will have two quadrants for league games. Evanston, Green River, and Rawlins are in the Southwest, while Cody, Lander, Lovell, and Powell. Lovell will host the West District Tournament, and it will be in Cowley on July 19-21, 2023.

The Single-A state tournament is in Sheridan on July 26-30, 2023. The winner will advance to the Northwest Class ‘A’ Regional Tournament (NWCART) in Havre, MT on Aug. 9-13, 2023.

Five new managers will lead teams into the new season. Austin Cowen takes the reigns of the Sheridan Troopers program. The Cody Cubs will be guided by Beau White, who takes over for Bart Grenz. Another managerial change is Jake Montoya taking over the Wheatland Lobos. Also, Adam Teten will be the new head coach of the Bulls in Buffalo. Finally, Dave Thompson is the head coach of the new Lander Legends.

The Class B Legion Baseball state tournament will be in Rock Springs on July 20-23, 2023.

The Class C Legion Baseball state tournament is in Douglas on July 13-16, 2023.

There are some new rules for coaches and umpires to be aware of with bat certification lists and colors of bats, plus some pitch count verifications, but nothing too significant for the new 2023 season.

It’s almost time to play ball!
