
Two Wyoming Coaching Icons Earn National Hall of Fame Honors
Two legendary coaches from Wyoming were recently inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) Hall of Fame. Powell’s Scott Smith and Laramie’s Tom Hudson were honored at the NHSACA annual convention in Iowa City, Iowa, on July 1, 2026. Both Smith and Hudson were longtime head coaches in their communities. They were two of 39 inductees in the 2026 NHSACA Hall of Fame Class.
Scott Smith coached for 44 years. He was the head track and field coach at Powell High School for 34 years. His teams won 11 state championships during his tenure. Smith coached more than 100 individuals to state titles. Powell won the rare double state championship in 2023, as the Panthers captured the 3A boys and girls team state championships in outdoor track and field. Smith was honored as the NHSACA National Coach of the Year for boys’ track and field in 2021.

WCA Spring Sports Coach of the Year Award Winners 2026

Tom Hudson was the head swim coach at Laramie High School for 32 years with the boys’ program and 31 years with the girls. He won a combined 21 state championships and had 17 runner-up finishes. Hudson led Laramie to 31 conference titles during his tenure. He had a dual record of 843-124-5. Hudson coached 31 athletes to National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) All-America honors. Hudson was named the NHSACA Swimming Coach of the Year in 2016.
Smith just retired from his position at Powell High School. Hudson retired in 2022.
