Upton Girls Finally Reach the Top of the 1A Mountain
The Upton girl's basketball weren't strangers to the 1A State Championship game. They were making the 3rd straight appearance in the title contest, losing to Southeast last year and Cokeville the year before that. This season, the Bobcats turned the tables and edged defending champion Southeast 59-54 for their 1st state championship in girls' play.
Upton shot the ball exceptionally well in the game; 48% in the first half and 57% in the 2nd half. The Cats rang up 24 points in the 4th quarter alone and at one point had a 12-point lead. Sophie Loudeback led the way with 15 points on 6-8 from the floor while Sydney Schneider had 14 points and made all 6 of her free throws. Upton had 23 wins this year and just 2 losses.
Southeast certainly played well enough to win as they shot 43% from the field and held a slim 31-26 advantage on the boards. Brenna Herring was solid once again with 16 points going 6-9 on the day with Kealy Carson contributing 14 points. The Cyclones were 27-3 this season and certainly were productive in basketball and volleyball with this group of seniors.
