For the third time in his career, Star Valley standout runner Peter Visser was honored as a Gatorade Wyoming Award winner.

Last month, the senior-to-be received the 2019-20 Gatorade Wyoming Boys’ Track and Field Athlete of the Year Award. He is the third runner from Star Valley High School to receive this accolade and the second in a row. His former teammate, Wyatt Moore, who won the award for 2018-19.

Visser has also won the past two Gatorade Wyoming Boys’ Cross Country Runner of the Year honor.

WyoPreps’ David Settle had a chance to recently visit by phone with Visser in an audio interview at the top of this story. Visser spoke about his reaction to winning another award from The Gatorade Company, how unique it was to receive this without an outdoor track and field season and compared his track honor to his cross country awards.

Visser also talked about his approach to the various length of races during a track season versus what it’s like in cross country, how his strategy doesn’t change, but he emphasized the team aspect of cross country. The senior-to-be also discussed his passion for running, how he’s training for whatever season there might be, his goals for the final year of his prep career, how Star Valley has a new-look team for cross country, and more.

This distance-running star already has seven state championships on his resume. He won the 2018 and 2019 Class 3A Cross Country State Championship, the 3200 meters at the 2019 Class 4A Wyoming State Track Championships, and captured four more at the 2020 Wyoming State Indoor Track Championships. Those were in the 800, 1600, and 3200-meters, plus he ran a leg on the winning 4x800 meter relay. Visser has also been on two state championship teams in cross country during the 2017 and 2019 seasons.

The 2020 Wyoming High School State Cross Country Championships are scheduled for Oct. 24, 2020, on Visser’s home course in Afton, WY for the second consecutive year.
