The Gillette Roughriders are back in the state championship game for AA Wyoming American Legion Baseball after a 5-3 victory over Sheridan on Thursday.

The Riders scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and got a complete game on the mound from Leigton Holden to oust their rivals, the Troopers.

Each team got an early solo home run. Gillette’s came from Jamen Kolata, while Sheridan’s Trevor Stowe hit his second home run of the tournament.

It was 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when the Riders scored three runs on a Sheridan error, an RBI double by Dominic Hecker, and a sacrifice fly. The Troopers got one back in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.

Holden allowed the three runs on six hits. He had four strikeouts and zero walks. He and Hecker discussed the victory and reaching the championship game with WyoPreps.

Colson Kluck had two hits to pace the Gillette offense. Four players, including Hecker, had one hit and one RBI.

Sheridan was led by Stowe with two hits and one RBI. Caden Steel added a pair of doubles in the game. Dylan Greenough-Groom went five and one-third innings, but he took the loss on the mound. Greenough-Groom gave up four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.

Gillette will play Cheyenne in the state championship game of the AA Wyoming American Legion Baseball State Tournament on Friday in Sheridan. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
