The 2022 Wyoming American Legion Baseball AA State Tournament opened on Monday in Sheridan with four first-round games.
The day began with the two-time defending champion Cheyenne Sixers pulling away from Evanston, 6-0. Starting pitcher Trenton Rodriguez kept the Outlaws in check while the Sixers' offense got on track. Rodriguez allowed no runs on two hits with five strikeouts over 4.2 innings pitched. Julian Romero led the offensive attack with two doubles and two RBIs. WyoPreps talked with the duo after the win.
The Jackson Giants pulled the first-day surprise, as they outlasted Laramie, 9-8 in 10 innings. Trayson Kostial had the game-winning RBI single on a blooper to right field in the top of the 10th inning. Then, Jackson survived a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the 10th. Xander Witt came in and got the last two outs with a strike out and fly ball to finish the game. Here's what the duo had to say after the Giants' win.
After a scoreless first couple of innings, the Gillette Riders steadily pulled away for a 10-0 victory in five innings over Rock Springs. The Riders scored three runs in the third, four in the fourth inning, and capped it on Seth Peterson's three-run triple off the wall in left-center field. Cory Schilling paced the Gillette offense with two hits and four RBIs. WyoPreps talked with the duo after their win.
Finally, the host Sheridan Troopers took the field and didn't disappoint the home fans, as they fought past the Casper Oilers, 6-2. Trevor Stowe allowed two runs, only one earned run, and scattered five hits over six and two-thirds innings pitched. Dalton Nelson had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. Sheridan and Casper were tied at 1-1 when the Troopers scored one in the third to take the lead. They added three runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth.
Day 2 of the Wyoming Legion Baseball AA State Tournament begins with two elimination games at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. That's followed by a pair of winner's bracket games at 4 and 7 p.m. Today's matchups are Laramie versus Rock Springs and Evanston against Casper in loser-out games. The last two are Gillette takes on Jackson at 4 p.m. and Cheyenne faces Sheridan at 7 p.m.
