2024-25 Wyoming High School Wrestling Season Preview
The 2024-25 Wyoming High School Wrestling season is here! Teams have started practice and look to begin competition later this week, as the first contest is on December 12. With the realignment, some teams have shifted around in the classes. Girls’ wrestling will be divided into East and West regions for the first time in the state.
The first scoreboard will be posted on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
There are nine returning girls’ champions. Star Valley, led by 145 lbs champion Cara Andrews, are favorites going into the season. The Braves will be going for their third straight title but will be challenged by a couple of different teams. Pinedale is also a strong contender, led by their two returning champions, McKinzie Mortensen at 100 lbs and Kaylea Mortensen at 105 lbs. The Wranglers have finished second the past two years at State. Kemmerer, Sheridan, and Wind River are other teams to watch throughout the season.
On the boys’ side, Green River, Evanston, and Riverton jump into Class 4A. The 4A regions now feature eight teams in the West and seven in the East. 3A is now 16 teams as Lovell and Glenrock have moved up from 2A. The Herders join the East region and the Bulldogs will be in the West. That leaves 20 teams in 2A, 10 on the East side and 10 on the West.
There are 16 returning champions across all three classes. With the reclass structure, the 3A boys will have more new champions than any other division.
Kemmerer and Lingle-Ft. Laramie/Southeast headline as the favorites for the title in 2A Both have two returning champions. Roany Proffitt, going for his fourth state title this year, and Owen Barton are back for the Rangers. Nathan Fish is also going for a four-peat for LFL/SE and will be aided by fellow champion Louden Bremer. There are three other returning champions in 2A. Moorcroft, Thermopolis, Southeast, and Big Piney are other teams to keep an eye out for.
There are only four returning state champions in Class 3A. Pinedale might be the team title favorite. They took second last year behind Green River. Wranglers are led by Ryan Nutt, who is going for his third straight wrestling title. Cody, led by 126 lbs champion Trey Smith, will also be in contention for the State title. Douglas, Powell, and Rawlins are other teams to watch for.
There are five returning champion wrestlers in 4A from last year’s state contest. Green River is already one of the title favorites in the class as the Wolves add three returning champions from the 3A division, Lucas Todd, Maddux Hintz, and James Herwaldt. Star Valley is another favorite as they also bring back three state champion wrestlers, Kimball Parry, Tel Parry, and Kooper Burk. Defending champion Thunder Basin will be a factor again. Sheridan is a team to watch as well. One wrestler in 4A who has a chance to join the elite four-time state title club is Liam Fox from Cheyenne East.
