She’s one of the top sprinters in the state, but you probably haven’t seen her race too much. A hidden gem on the west side of the state is Star Valley’s Sara McKen.

Most of Wyoming doesn’t get to see McKen run too often. Why? Star Valley High School track and field compete in some out-of-state track meets or stays on the western and southwestern side of the state, but that doesn’t keep WyoPreps from noticing some of her top-notch results.

McKen has won the 100 and 200 meters at four outdoor events this spring. She also has victories in the 400 meters and triple jump at two different competitions. The Star Valley senior has already pre-qualified for next month’s state track championship in Casper in the 100 and 200 meters. McKen has also run a leg on two different 4x100 meter relay teams for Star Valley that have qualified for the state meet.

Her 200-meter time of 25.42 seconds is the top time among Class 4A sprinters in the state. She’s among the top five in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.63 seconds.

WyoPreps had a chance to catch up with the Star Valley senior earlier this week to chat about track and field. McKen feels pretty good about how her outdoor season is going right now. She discussed what she loves about the sport, what her coaches are working on with her, signing at Lane Community College in Oregon, not seeing some of the other top sprinters in the state, and more.

McKen won the 100 and 200 at last year’s 4A West Regional track meet. She finished fourth in the 100 meters a year ago at the outdoor state track championship and was eighth in the 200 meters.

The senior took second in the 200 meters at the 2022 Wyoming Indoor Track State Championships last month in Gillette. She also ran on Star Valley’s second-place 4x200 meter relay team.
