Hays, Smith, and Alt Receive WyoPreps Athlete of the Week Awards 12-18-24 [VIDEOS]
A standout point guard and two champion wrestlers are the first WyoPreps Athlete of the Week honorees for the Winter Sports season. These three saw individual success but also helped their teams in the process. Grace Hays from the Cody Fillies was the girls’ award winner, while Cody’s Trey Smith and William Alt of Kelly Walsh shared the boys’ honor.
WYOPREPS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK WINNERS 12-18-24
Girls Winner
Hays led the Fillies to a 3-0 start to their season at the Gillette Early Bird Tournament. She nearly averaged a triple-double. Hays helped Cody defeat No. 4 Buffalo, 52-28, in their first game of the new season. They followed that with an 81-18 victory over Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Their final win was against Torrington, 69-24. Hays averaged 23 points, 10.3 steals, and 8.7 rebounds per game. The sophomore added 4.3 assists and 1.3 blocks per game and shot 52 percent from the field. Hays went 10-15 at the charity stripe.
WyoPreps visited with Grace about her individual and team performance. Hays felt good about her effort but said there's always room for improvement. She discussed what she's tried to improve on, adjusting without older sister Molly Hays around, areas she can improve in, and more.

Boys Winners
William Alt of Kelly Walsh shared the boys’ award. The junior won the 150-pound title at the Rapid City Invitational in South Dakota. He was the only champion from Wyoming at the event. Alt went 6-0 on the mat. After two wins by fall, Alt had a tech fall of 17-1 and reached the quarterfinals. The junior earned a 7-5 decision in the quarters. His opponent was injured during his semifinal match. Alt jumped out 3-0 in the championship before his opponent tied it. A late reversal gave him a 5-3 victory. His effort helped Kelly Walsh take fifth place in the wrestling tournament out of 53 teams. The Trojans had the highest finish of a Wyoming team.
WyoPreps caught up with Alt and discussed his performance on the mat last weekend. He described his performance en route to the title, what he worked on after last season to be better prepared for this season, his close victory in the championship match, and more.
Trey Smith of Cody went 6-0 at the Powell Invitational to start the 2024-25 season. Smith went 3-0 in the varsity duals last Friday. He had a 19-2 tech fall victory and two pins. The senior followed that with a 3-0 mark and the 132-pound title in the invitational last Saturday. Smith won all three matches by tech fall. His scores were 17-2, 19-4, and 17-2. Smith was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament by the referees. His efforts led the Cody Broncs to a 9th-place finish out of 24 teams.
WyoPreps was unable to connect with Trey, but we congratulate him on his success last week and for being one of our honorees.
