The Burns Broncs secured a playoff spot for the first time since 2019 and only the 2nd time since 2013 with a tight 23-21 road win over Wheatland on Friday night. Wheatland kicked off the scoring in this game with an 18-yard run for a touchdown from Aric Suko but Burns answered with a score of their own as Jared Allen threw a 4-yard TD pass to Riley McLaughlin so it was 7 all after one-quarter of play.

Allen really got things going for Burns in the 2nd quarter with a 68-yard punt return for a touchdown and the Broncs added a field goal to lead 17-7 at halftime. Wheatland jumped back into the with a pair of 3rd quarter touchdowns with the first one a 51-yard TD strike from Brock Peasley to JP Anderson and the 2nd one was a 62-yard connection from those 2 guys so that put the Bulldogs in front 21-17.

Burns pulled ahead later in the 3rd quarter on a TD pass from Allen to Carter David that covered 59 yards. The extra point was missed and the Broncs led 23-21. Both defenses held in the 4th quarter as Burns wins it by 2 as the Broncs get to 4-3. They punched their ticket to the postseason and will be the #3 seed from the 2A East with a win over Big Horn this week. They can also get the #3 seed with a loss on Friday and a Newcastle win over Torrington. The Broncs will be the 4th seed if they lose and Torrington beats Newcastle.

Wheatland is 2-6 on the year and will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2011. The Bulldogs will wrap up the campaign at Tongue River. We have a great collection of pics from the Burns-Wheatland game, courtesy of Tony Montoya in our gallery below. Take a look!
