Watch Our Wyoming High School Activities Association November 2024 Update With Commissioner Trevor Wilson
Wyoming High School Activities Association Commissioner Trevor Wilson admitted it’s been a pretty quiet fall during the 2024-25 school year in a visit with WyoPreps on Monday. The WHSAA Board of Directors has had two meetings so far, but the two agendas have not featured too many major topics. We did address two football items with Commissioner Wilson, regarding Guernsey-Sunrise and Cheyenne South.
WYOPREPS CONVERSATION WITH WHSAA COMMISSIONER TREVOR WILSON
Wilson announced on Nov. 6 that Guernsey-Sunrise chose to forfeit their 2025 9-man football schedule. They will play a 6-man JV-only schedule next fall. That was not a surprise after the Vikings forfeited most of their games this fall. Guernsey-Sunrise opted to play 9-man a few years ago, and Wilson said he wouldn’t be surprised if they go to 6-man in the next reclassification cycle that starts in the fall of 2026.
The bigger topic was the status of Cheyenne South’s football program. The Bison have lost 47 straight games, and there have been calls from fans and media for the WHSAA to do something to help the program. Wilson said he’s had discussions with South AD Wendy Johnson but has not heard definitively what they will do next fall. He feels that opting down to 3A might not be in their best interest, but it will be the school’s decision.
Approved Items by the WHSAA Board of Directors This Fall
The WHSAA Board of Directors has passed a few items from their two fall meetings. The first item passed was a proposal to play the Class 2A State Golf Championships on an 18-hole course. That was approved on the final reading in October. Earlier this month, the board approved having 16 swimmers advance to the finals at the state swim meets. That would start in the 2026-27 school year. It would place the top eight swimmers in the championship finals, and the next eight swimmers would be in the consolation finals, essentially using all eight lanes of the pool. The WHSAA also passed a proposal for the State Marching Band competition to have two divisions. One would be the Scholastic Division, which would be more like the festival style that has been used, and the second would be the Open Division, which would be more competitive. Schools can choose which division they want to compete in. That was approved on a 12-5 vote.
Two more items will be going out to the district meetings in January. The first will be a proposal from the Handbook Committee, as the WHSAA looks at rules governing Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) for high school sports in the state. The second is a tennis sportsmanship proposal to align the high school rules in Wyoming with those of the USTA (United States Tennis Association) regarding sportsmanship and tennis etiquette.
Commissioner Wilson addressed several of these topics and provided a review of the fall sports season, in addition, to our conversation about football at the two schools in the video at the top of the story.
